Atyopsis Moluccensis (Asian fan shrimp)
Origin: Asia - Maluku. Appearance: The colour of these shrimp is usually brown but can vary from red to orange. A yellow stripe on the back or side is characteristic for these shrimp. Colours change as they grow older and can change due to the quality of the water or their well-being.
Fans can be found on the first two pair of legs. An innumerable amount of long thin hairs, used to filter food from the water. They eat by folding the fans and bring these to their mouth.
Sexing: A full grown male can reach a size of 8-12cm whilst a female will grow to 6-8cm. Males have thicker frontal legs and small hooks attached to them. Females do not have this.
Life span: 5-8 years. Size: Maximum 12cm. Sexually mature: Unknown. Gestation: 20-50 days. Larvae will hatch within a 2 week timeframe. Character: Peaceful and a bit shy. They will not harm any other animals as they only have fans and no claws. Once they feel comfortable they will show them self more often. Until then they usually appear during the dark. Can be found frequently close to the outflow of the filter.
Tank setup: A tank of at least 60cm with enough current due to the feeding habits of this shrimp, and clean water. Make sure there are plenty of hiding places like wood, plants and holes.
These shrimp are excellent climbers so always make sure all aquarium openings are closed. Waterconditions: Temperature of 20-28ºC and acidity of pH6.5 tot pH7.6
A wide range of water-hardness is tolerated. Feeding: They filter small food particles and micro-organism from the water with their fans.
Besides micro-organism they also feed on small and soft food like artemia, water fleas(Daphnia), flakes and algae wafers.
Breeding: For breeding brackish to salt water is needed. Tank mates: Other peaceful fish and shrimp. These shrimp can be kept solitary.
