Macrobrachium Mirabile
Origin: These shrimp can be found in India in estuary areas with a sand bottom. These shrimp like a sand bottom so it can dig. Appearance: The Macrobrachium Mirabile is a beautiful shrimp for the aquarium. It has black and white stripes (pearls). They can grow up to 5cm. Sexing: Females are more robust but smaller than males. Life span: Up to 3 years. Size: 3 tot 5cm. Sexually mature: From 3cm. Gestation: 3 to 4 weeks. Character: These shrimp do not swim very often. They can be found mostly on the bottom of the aquarium or to be climbing on wood and stones.
They are not aggressive or show territorial behavior and leave tank-mates alone. They are able to sit on a root the whole day and only move 1cm.
Tank setup: From 40 liter with small-leafed plants, Java moss, sandy soil or small stones, wood and hollow pipes. These shrimp like a well planted tank.
Waterconditions: Temperature 23-26ºC with an acidity of pH7. Feeding: Will eat algae, wafer, special shrimp-food, cooked vegetables and detritus. Also frozen food and snails are eaten. Breeding: Salt water breeding. Tank mates: Small and non-aggressive fish. Copyright photos: © Garnalenkweker
