Macrobrachium Rosenbergii (Giant Malaysian Prawn)
Origin: Thailand and Australia. Appearance: Giant shrimp which can grow up to 35cm (bodysize) and up to 50cm including claws. Transparant blue/grey and can have orange dots on the tail and body.
Sexing: Males have larger claws, females have larger plates on both sides of the abdomen. Life span: 2-3 years. Size: Up to 25cm without claws Sexually mature: From 3 to 5 months. Gestation: Character: Aggressive towards fish. In an aquarium they seem to be cleaning all the time. Tank setup: From 60cm. Actually not really suited very well for an aquarium. Make sure the tank is well oxygenated.
Waterconditions: Temperature of 24-28ÂșC with an acidity of pH7.2 to pH8.4 and a water hardness of 2-30dGH. Feeding: They will eat nearly everything including the fish when kept in the same tank. In the wild they will eat worms, snails, mussels, beans and water plants. They will also eat general shrimp-food and like squid and frozen food like brine-shrimp. They sometimes need a while to get used to new food.
Breeding: Young need brackish water to grow up. Females can carry between 3000 and 12000 eggs. Tank mates: None! If any then only small and fast fish or small shrimp will survive. Copyright photos:
