Overview photo:

Procambarus Clarkii 'White' (White swamp crayfish)

Origin: The reddish-brown wild P. Clarkii is native to Louisiana, but now lives in many European countries. The colour variants are the result of selective breeding.
Appearance: Grows up to 14 cm (body size). Has puckered shears. Has a blue colour.
They have been on the list of invasive exotic species since August 2016. They may no longer be held or traded. Individuals who already owned this species as pets before August 2016 can keep the animals until they die of natural causes. The conditions are that the animals cannot escape and that they are prevented from reproducing.
Sexing: Males have gonopods and larger claws.
Life span: 3 years.
Size: Up to 14cm.
Sexually mature: 4 months.
Gestation: 3 to 4 weeks.
Character: They are curious and active during the day. They often dig burrows and when given the chance they leave the water in search of food. They can be aggressive towards fish but this need not be the case. This crayfish is not very suitable for a community tank.
Tank setup: A special tank from 80cm and above. Provide some hiding places and oxygen plants. Space and hiding places are important because otherwise they are vulnerable during moulting.
Waterconditions: Temperature 16-28ºC with an acidity of pH6.5 to pH8.0 and a hardness of 2-20dGH.
Feeding: They eat almost anything. It can also happen that a fish is caught when they are hungry. They can eat and wreck plants.
Breeding: No longer allowed!!
Tank mates: They can be kept with 5 or more in an aquarium of 100cm.
